Semax mimics only a fragment of ACTH, delivering neurotrophic effects (neuron survival and growth support) without the endocrine effects of full-length ACTH (cortisol/androgen release). Developed in the 1980s by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it has been extensively studied for cognitive enhancement, neuroprotection, and mood regulation.

Mécanisme d'action

Semax modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic systems for mood regulation and cognition. It increases Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, supporting neuron survival, synaptogenesis, and neural plasticity. It regulates the HPA axis to normalize cortisol output after chronic stress. Additionally, it improves cerebral blood flow and provides antioxidant protection for neural cells.
